Diabetes is a serious medical problem that can affect anyone at any time. Nearly 30 million Americans have diabetes, which is a jump of nearly 50 percent from the early 2000s. There are two types of diabetes: type 1 and type 2. Type 1 diabetes is more common in children, and it is a condition where the immune system attacks organs in the body, especially the pancreas. Type 2 diabetes generally happens in adults older than 35, and it happens when the body can no longer make enough of a hormone called insulin. Without enough insulin, your body will have too much sugar in the blood, and that can cause serious damage to your organs.
One of the big differences between diabetes type 1 and type 2 is that type 1 is more common in children, while type 2 generally develops as adults get older and less active. Type 1 diabetes is considered more aggressive because it happens when the body’s ability to create insulin is almost destroyed. The pancreas attempts to make enough insulin to regulate the sugar, but eventually, the job is too much and the body needs help getting the insulin it needs. The warning signs of diabetes can come years before real symptoms start to show up. If you find yourself being more thirsty and hungry than usual, then it may be time to go see a doctor. Some of the other noticeable warning signs of diabetes include having a dry mouth all of the time, losing weight when you are not trying to, being tired all of the time, and having to go to the bathroom a lot more often. If these signs show up and disappear within the same few days, then it is possible that you had a temporary problem such as the flu. But if these warning signs do not go away, then you need to get to a doctor as soon as possible.
If you ignore the warning signs of diabetes for too long, then you will start to experience some of the symptoms of diabetes. Once you start experiencing symptoms, you are at risk for any of the more serious damage diabetes can do, such as a heart attack or blindness. Some of the more advanced symptoms of diabetes include a tingling feeling in the hands and feet, blurry or double vision all of the time, constant stomach aches that lead to vomiting, cuts that take a very long time to heal, and getting infections that never seem to go away. These advanced symptoms should act as red flags that get you to go to the doctor immediately and find out what is going on with your body.
It is important to remember that sometimes, diabetes does not need a reason to develop in a person. Some people develop diabetes as a result of their family history or some other condition that they can’t control. If you are taking steps to avoid getting diabetes but you are still experiencing the symptoms, you should get to a doctor immediately. But that does not mean that you should not still try to take care of your own health. A healthy lifestyle can help to prevent diabetes, and good health can also help fend off other serious conditions, such as heart disease. To help your body fight disease, you should drink plenty of water each day, get at least 60 minutes of exercise, avoid eating foods with processed sugar in them, and make sure there are plenty of fruits and vegetables in your diet each and every day.
