Am I Using the Right Floss?

Am I Using the Right Floss?

The professionals at Dental Solutions are often asked for assistance or recommendations in purchasing dental items for at-home care and hygiene. We are happy to know that our patients are taking their care so seriously and will make recommendations based on products that we know will serve our patients well. Dental solutions is often asked about certain brands of tooth brushes, mouth rinses and even over the counter whitening products. However we are rarely asked to discuss the right type of floss for your unique situation. There are a number of flossing products on the market today and it is important to choose the product that will not only work well at keeping your teeth healthy but is also easy enough to use that you do not dread flossing each day.

  • Classic Floss, Available in Waxed Finish: This type of floss is what you will see used in the Dental Solutions office. This floss is relatively inexpensive and widely available. It is a traditional floss that, when waxed, can easily slide through almost any teeth. Additionally classic, waxed floss is often available in flavored varieties, including mint.
  • Dental Tape: This type of floss is, as it sounds, constructed in a flat fashion that functions much like a very thin tape. Dental tape is effective for patients who find that traditional floss bunches or even shreds in between their teeth and could use more gliding capabilities from their floss.
  • Super Floss: This product contains the best of several worlds. It is slightly more expensive that other types of floss and is commonly used by patients with metal braces. Super floss incorporates three different compositions, a pointed guide of floss to begin lacing through your teeth, following by traditional waxed floss, and finishes with a thick spongy consistency – perfect for cleaning debris from wide spaces and braces brackets.
  • Individual Flossers and Picks: These are perfect for the dental patient on the go who would like a handy and safe way to floss after lunches or after consuming particularly sticky foods. Just use and discard them. Perfect for those with better things to do!
